Ceilidhs

A ceilidh is one of the easiest ways to get a room full of people dancing. Nobody needs to know the dances beforehand, and complete beginners are very welcome.

I call ceilidhs for weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, barn dances and all sorts of private celebrations. I teach each dance clearly before the music starts and continue calling as everyone dances, so people can simply join in and enjoy themselves.

What to Expect

I normally start with something very simple so that everyone can get onto the floor without worrying about knowing the steps. Once people become more confident, I can gradually introduce some of the better-known Scottish dances and reels.

The programme depends entirely on the people in the room. Some groups want an hour of straightforward, energetic dancing; others may want several shorter sessions spread across an evening. I can adjust things as we go rather than sticking rigidly to a predetermined programme.

There is no need for previous experience, special footwear or even a dancing partner.

Music

I can provide high-quality recorded music through my own PA system, or work alongside a live Scottish dance band. For larger events or occasions where you would like live music, I can also recommend bands and musicians I regularly work with.

Ceilidh or Reeling?

A ceilidh is generally more informal than a traditional reeling event. The emphasis is on teaching the dances from scratch and getting everyone involved, regardless of experience. If you are planning a more formal evening for experienced reelers, have a look at the Reeling Events page instead.
